Mitochondria Biogenesis: How Exercise Builds Your Powerhouse

March 20, 2015Open Athletic Innovation

Recent, and relevant, a thesis produced by Dr. Niklas Psilander from The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden examines the influence that different exercise regimes have on mitochondria biogenesis and performance in untrained, and highly trained individuals.

We all know mitochondria are the said "powerhouse" of our cells because they are the site of ATP production. But how are we to go about developing them?

Is weight training actually detrimental?

Is long slow distance, or high intensity interval training more effective?

Do our macronutrient proportions have an effect?

These are just some of the questions addressed within the document. Even if you do not know much about mitochondria or why they are important, you may benefit from the introduction and background information provided within.

Happy Reading!
